Scrapbook eyelets are useful embellishments for many different types of projects. Whether you're working on your daughter's school scrapbook or your own wedding album, there's an eyelet that fits your needs.

About Eyelets

Eyelets have been around for years, but they haven't always been used for scrapbooking. In fact, the most common use for eyelets is to strengthen the holes in clothing. Only recently have scrapbookers begun to see the creative possibilities in using eyelets for paper crafting projects.

In scrapbooking, silver, gold, black, white, and brown eyelets are the typically the most versatile embellishments. However, you can also purchase eyelets in colors such as red, blue, green, pink, orange, and yellow. Square eyelets and eyelets in seasonal shapes such as snowflakes or pumpkins are available as well as the traditional round eyelets.

Eyelets can be purchased wherever scrapbooking supplies are sold. Eyelets labeled as safe for scrapbooking should be made from non-rusting metallic compounds that will not damage your photos and memorabilia. Scrapbook grommets are similar to eyelets, but in a larger scale. Although it's quite possible to use several eyelets on one scrapbook layout, grommets are more effective when you limit yourself to one or two per page.

How to Set an Eyelet

Although scrapbook eyelets may look impressive, setting an eyelet on your page is a fairly simple task.

1. Place your paper on a self healing mat.
2. Use an anywhere hole punch and a hammer to make a hole for your eyelet.
3. Insert the eyelet into the hole.
4. Turn the paper over.
5. Place the pointed tip of the eyelet setter in the eyelet.
6. Tap the end of the tool with the hammer until the back of the eyelet is pressed flat against the paper. (Leaving sharp edges on the back of the eyelet may cause damage to your photos when the layout is added to your album.)

Storing Eyelets

Since scrapbook eyelets are very tiny embellishments, storing your collection can be a tricky task. While Making Memories sells eyelets in individual plastic containers, other brands come in small bags that must be discarded. In this case, try using one of the following inexpensive storage solutions:

• Glass baby food jars
• Empty prescription bottles
• Small tackle boxes
• Tic tac mint containers

Using Scrapbook Eyelets

Once you discover how easy it is to use eyelets, you'll want to add them to every layout! Here are some suggestions for including eyelets in your scrapbooking projects:

• Use an eyelet as the center of a small flower.
• Use eyelets to replace the dots in the letters "i" or "j" on your page titles.
• Reinforce a tag's hole with an eyelet before adding decorative fibers.
• Attach vellum quotes or journaling blocks using eyelets instead of adhesive.
• Replace the bullets in a journaling list with small eyelets.
• Make a border around the edge of a favorite photo for a unique matting treatment.
• Use multiple eyelet colors to make "sprinkles" on a cupcake paper piecing accent for a birthday page.
• Combine eyelets and craft wire to make a border that resembles a string of Christmas tree lights.
• Scatter silver eyelets across black cardstock to mimic the look of a nighttime sky.
